ABOUT*
The work of Sydney-based artist Brock Q. Piper b.1985, is characterised by an intricate interplay of narrative, symbolism, and psychological resonance. Through meticulously layered oil paintings, Piper constructs enigmatic interior scenes that explore the complexities of human identity, memory, and emotional interiority. Figures emerge from darkness, engaged in silent exchanges, while wild animals—at once out of place and strangely central—occupy the compositional heart of each work. These visual elements combine to create deeply contemplative tableaux, rich with allegory and psychological symbolism.
Piper’s formative years were spent on a family farm in the Snowy Mountains of rural New South Wales, an environment that deeply informed his sensitivity to space, isolation, and mythic storytelling. His practice is further shaped by extensive travel and exposure to diverse cultural narratives, resulting in a painterly language that traverses personal, political, and philosophical terrain. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Fine Art from the University of Melbourne, and in 2020 was awarded the George Hicks Contemporary Art Prize, recognising the strength and originality of his contributions to contemporary Australian painting.
Each composition begins with charcoal drawings—gestural, spontaneous marks that establish a foundation of immediacy. Over time, these are layered with delicate oil glazes, resulting in works that are visually complex and emotionally charged. This methodological duality—between spontaneity and control, instinct and refinement—mirrors the conceptual dualities at the heart of his practice.
Piper's paintings are populated by recurring archetypes—the king, the navigator, the scholar—whose symbolic postures and costuming represent various aspects of human psychology and existential struggle. These figures are not involved in narrative storytelling in a conventional sense, but instead exist in suspended psychological states, interacting through symbolic gestures and tethered to one another by red strings. These motifs suggest orientation, entanglement, and the fragile structures we construct to navigate uncertainty.
A defining feature of Piper’s work is the inclusion of animals rendered in a manner reminiscent of medieval bestiaries, where creatures were often imagined from second-hand descriptions. In Piper’s hands, these animals function as psychological symbols: embodiments of suppressed truths, internalised fears, or unresolved emotional conflicts. Often interpreted as the proverbial “elephant in the room,” these creatures disrupt the illusion of domestic stability, intruding upon the human drama with silent yet undeniable presence.
Light plays a central symbolic role in these works—not merely as a formal device, but as a metaphor for awareness, revelation, and ambiguity. Beams of illumination pierce through shadow, exposing fragments of truth while simultaneously obscuring others. This interplay between concealment and disclosure reinforces the thematic tension between clarity and confusion that underpins the work.
Piper’s conceptual framework is informed by a diverse array of thinkers and artists, including W.G. Sebald, Carl Jung, Friedrich Nietzsche, Frank Waters, and biographer Michael Peppiatt, as well as the poetic sensibilities of musicians Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. These influences converge in a practice that privileges psychological depth, symbolic layering, and a resistance to fixed interpretation.
Crucially, Piper challenges the traditional dynamics between artwork and audience.
“The audience is as much on trial as the artist or the figures within the work,” he notes. “They are presented with the sensation of somewhere between their own narrative and the artist—they are satellites with each other, locked in temporary orbits, not trajectories.”
In this way, the viewer becomes an active participant—neither fully external nor fully immersed, but implicated in the unfolding dialogue of the work. Piper’s paintings do not seek to resolve or explain; rather, they invite viewers into an extended act of contemplation, reflection, and self-inquiry.
Through his sophisticated layering of form and concept, Brock Q. Piper offers a contemporary meditation on the human condition—one that resists resolution and embraces complexity. His paintings function as symbolic interiors, charting the tensions between instinct and reason, the spoken and the unspoken, the seen and the hidden. In an era defined by immediacy and surface, Piper’s practice compels us to dwell in uncertainty, to consider what lies beneath, and to confront the fragile architectures of meaning we construct to make sense of our inner and outer worlds.
